Book Review: Brave New World

Brave New World is a provocative and thrilling mystery meant for the extreme science fiction loving crowd, for those who love realistic fantasy. At first it was kind of difficult for me to catch on to the book because I’m not a big science fiction person, but the story made me open my eyes to a world completely opposite of mine.
John is the reason why I loved Brave New World. He was the most relatable character because he knew Shakespeare, love, and emotion. The world that he is from is so different from ours, yet it is the same. Where as in Lenina’s world, we are polar opposites.
Huxley uses satire to make his point of how technology has taken over our world. He wrote this novel 80 years ago, and yet it is intriguing to see how much he predicted has come true. Sex, drugs, and promiscuity. All of these things were seen as obscure and were totally looked down upon in the 1930’s and even today, but somehow through it all Huxley makes them seem as common and normal as filling up your car at the gas station. In the world that Huxley creates, things that we find normal such as family and marriage are not only frowned upon but don’t exist.
Wanting to fit in and be like everyone else is something that we can all relate too. Bernard, an alpha minus male, shows us this completely. Following him along we can sympathize with him wanting to be like everyone else. And like us to, he never seems to be accepted and his exiled away.
I would personally recommend this book to people who love science fiction. This isn’t exactly a kid friendly book, but it is perfect for high school students and above. For those who love this book I would also recommend the book “1984”, because they are very similar.

POW #6 Restaurant Review

Restaurant Review
One of my favorite restaurants is called Barley’s Brewhaus. It’s a great place to go for lunch or dinner. I recently went there for WPA. I chose this place to eat because they are professional and affordable. It has a great family atmosphere but they also have a bar on the other side of the room for adults, it’s kind of like the best of both worlds.  It is located on the corner of 119th and Quivira I like it because it’s close to my house. The quality of food is very good for the price. Typical meals range from $10 to $15 a person.  Rumor has it that they have over 100 different kinds of beer for the occasional beer lover. I would kind of compare this place to Applebee’s or TGI Friday’s.

Irony in Brave New World

Explanation: John the Savage

Situational Irony

Huxely's Purpose: John is labeled a savage in Brave New World because he rejects the society's values and prefers to live as people did in older times. Even though he rejects what society tells him is "civilized," John has his own mindset and experience to what we consider "civilized" today.

POW #5 Movie Review

Toy Story, a 1995 Disney and Pixar film written by Joss Whedon, Andrew Stanton, Joel Cohen, and Alec Sokolow, was directed by John Lasseter. This animated family comedy is a sweet and revolutionary film in history. Andy's toys are fearful of being replaced when the boy's birthday comes along. Woody, his favorite toy, a pull-string cowboy doll, discovers the boy has a new toy, Buzz Lightyear, the latest, greatest action figure, complete with pop-out wings and laser action. Woody's plan to get rid of Buzz backfires and he finds himself lost in the world outside of Andy's room, with Buzz as his only companion. They pair are forced to pull together to escape the evil Sid and find their way back to Andy.

The title of the film explains exactly what the story is about: toys! The entire film revolves around the mysterious and unknown life of toys; it’s a toy story. The conflict between Woody and Buzz develops very early on in the film with the jealousy that Woody feels when Buzz displaces him, and his irritation with the fact Buzz does not know he is a toy. This conflict remains throughout the entire film, resulting in Woody and Buzz ending up in a situation where the only way out is for them to work together.

This film is very entertaining.  The fact that it was the first completely computer generated film was very interesting to know. It gave me a new respect for the film, and I saw it in a different way than I had ever seen it. It’s always entertaining to watch a Disney movie and return to childhood, if only for a couple hours. Toy Story was the first feature length, computer-animated film in history. Lasseter and Disney created a film that would change the world of animation forever. Today, many more movies have been created entirely by computer animation. However, few eclipse the pioneering Toy Story, which used computers to build an imaginative world in which toys are the main characters and have complex feelings and lives, just like humans. Every thing in the film had to be created. Every blade of grass, every scuffed door, and every single toy was created completely from scratch. Very cool!

Tom Hanks provided the voice of Woody, and Tim Allen provided the voice of Buzz Lightyear. The two are such a great match and I couldn’t imagine hearing Toy Story any other way. They are perfect! Tom Hanks’ reaction to the introduction of Tim Allen’s character is awesome and the tension between the two is apparent throughout the whole film. Tim Allen is a great space ranger and I really like the way he plays his role. Buzz isn’t a prince charming or a Dudley Do-Right; he is a whole new kind of Disney superhero! I always find it funny how Disney movies hold a permanent place in people’s hearts. Everyone has seen them or at least heard of them, and Toy Story is no exception. I love this movie! Though not my favorite Disney Classic, it is at least in the top five! It is such a sweet and cute movie, a nice transition from the traditional sing songy fairy tales in other Disney movies. Great film!

Pow #3 Photo

My favorite picture is a picture of my family. My family and I are so close and without them I am nothing.  I associate this picture with happiness because my family makes me happy. In this picture it was Easter and it was a very warm Easter and probably one that I will never forget. The weather was amazing and my whole family was there.  It was one of the 1st times that I actually felt happy to be around my family because sometimes it’s a lot of drama.

POW #2 Satire

This is a good example of satire because it shows that even babies are being introduced to technology with out even knowing it. At the same time its kind of sad because twenty years ago and a child was to do something like that, it wouldn't even mean the same thing. They would be scolded not praised. The author is trying to make the point that Facebook is going to far.
